Hurricane Gonzalo Sparks UK Gale Warning

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 19 Oktober 2014 | 00.57

Gale force winds are threatening to cause major travel disruption and hazardous driving conditions as the tail end of Hurricane Gonzalo hits the UK early next week, the Met Office has warned.

A "yellow" alert - warning of severe weather which has the potential to cause danger to life or widespread disruption - has been issued by the forecaster for much of Britain on Tuesday, when the worst of the storm will be felt following its expected arrival on Monday night.

Strong gales of up to 60mph and heavy rain will sweep west to east for around 24 hours, particularly affecting Northern Ireland, northern England, North Wales, southern and eastern Scotland.

The Met Office said: "The remains of Hurricane Gonzalo will move in to the Atlantic in the next few days and then run eastwards across the UK on Monday night.

"Whilst this will no longer be hurricane strength it still looks likely to bring a period of very strong winds and heavy rain to the UK with the strongest winds on Tuesday as the low pressure clears eastwards.

"With the energy in this system and the complex nature of its transition from Hurricane to mid-latitude system some uncertainty remains in the track and intensity.

"However, there is the potential for some significant disruption to travel from the very strong winds on Tuesday, particularly as the strongest winds will coincide with rush-hour in places.

"Difficult driving conditions are also expected thanks to large amounts of spray on the roads and potential for wind-blown debris."

Hurricane Gonzalo has caused widespread damage in Bermuda, pulling up trees and cutting power to 70,000 people.

Gonzalo approached Bermuda as a Category 3 storm then weakened to Category 2 before moving ashore with sustained winds of 110mph (175kph).

Nearly all of the island's roads were impassable and cluttered with debris and fallen trees, police said.

The roof of Bermuda's hospital was damaged and there was also water damage in its new intensive care unit.

Royal Navy ship HMS Argyll, with a crew of some 180 sailors, is expected to arrive on Sunday to help with recovery efforts.

The tiny territory is prepared for significant flooding as a result of storm surges.

Cameron Presses EU Leaders On Ebola Fund

David Cameron has called for European Union leaders to double their contribution to help tackle ebola, demanding a combined 1bn euro (£800m) pledge.

The Prime Minister has written to the other 26 leaders and European Council president Herman van Rompuy calling for agreement to an "ambitious package of support" at a Brussels summit next week.

He made clear his frustration that other countries are failing to shoulder their share of the burden of international efforts to deal with the epidemic in West Africa which has killed more than 4,500.

Britain has committed £125m to its contribution - the second highest sum after the US. Downing Street said the total contribution from the EU is 500m euros (£400m).

More money is needed to train at least 2,000 workers to go out to the affected regions, Mr Cameron suggested - appealing also for a "duty of care package" to be established for any that contracted ebola while working at a European-run or funded medical facility.

Video: Paying The Price For Ebola

In his letter, the Prime Minister said: "The rapid spread of the disease and recent cases outside the West African region demonstrate the magnitude of the task at hand.

"The World Health Organisation forecast 20,000 cases in West Africa by November 2014. I believe that much more must be done."

The demand comes after the head of the World Bank warned the battle against the ebola outbreak is being lost.

Speaking after the United Nations revealed it had received less than 40% of the nearly $1bn ($600m) it had requested to fight the deadly disease, World Bank chief Jim Yong Kim blamed a lack of international solidarity for the failure to stop its spread.

Video: No UK Checks On African Passengers

"We are losing the battle," he told reporters in Paris.

"Certain countries are only worried about their own borders," he told reporters in Paris.

Meanwhile, President Obama moved to reassure the American public over ebola by revealing he hugged nurses treating patients with the virus.

"The only way that a person can contract the disease is by coming into direct contact with the bodily fluids of somebody who is already showing symptoms," he said.

Video: HMS Argus in More Detail

"I've met and hugged some of the doctors and nurses who've treated ebola patients. I've met with an ebola patient who recovered, right in the Oval Office. And I'm fine."

International anxieties over the spread of ebola were highlighted as a cruise ship carrying a lab technician who worked with samples taken from an infected nurse in Dallas was stopped from docking in Belize and Mexico

"It is the first time that this has happened, and it was decided the ship should not dock as a preventative measure against Ebola," Erce Barron, port authority director in Quintana Roo, said.

As part of European efforts to stop the spread, France will start screening air passengers for ebola today.

Air France flight attendants have also called for a halt to all flights from Guinea, one of the three hardest-hit countries.

The US, Britain and Canada have already launched screenings at airports for passengers from ebola-hit areas.

UK Police To Probe Thailand Tourist Murders

British police officers are to travel to Thailand to help investigate the murders of tourists David Miller and Hannah Witheridge.

Detectives from the UK were cleared to work on the case after Thailand's military ruler dropped objections to their involvement.

The agreement came after David Cameron and General Prayuth Chan-ocha discussed controversy surrounding the Thai-led investigation of the killings at a summit in Milan.

The British officers are expected to seek independent checks of DNA samples seen as key to the case against two Burmese men accused of the crime.

They are also expected to examine claims by the two migrant workers that they have been mistreated by the Thai authorities.

Mr Miller, 24, and Ms Witheridge, 23, were found dead last month on a beach on Koh Tao, an island in Thailand's Surat Thani province.

Video: Sept 19: CCTV Of Murder Victim

Court proceedings have reportedly started against the two suspects amid international concern about the investigation, including from the Foreign Office and human rights groups.

The Thai leader had previously rejected offers of help and insisted the UK no longer had "any more doubts" about the quality of the investigation following ambassador-level talks.

But sources said he agreed to a British police delegation when pressed on the issue by the Prime Minister at the Asia Europe Meeting in Italy.

A diplomatic source said: "Obviously it is for the Thai authorities to lead and carry out that judicial process.

"But it is important that it is fair and transparent and that both of the families can be reassured that it is the murderers that have been brought to justice.

Video: Oct 3: Thai Murder Suspects Paraded

"What the PM secured this morning was agreement from the Thai PM that we can send some British police investigators to Koh Tao to work with the Royal Thai Police on this."

The Burmese men who have been charged with the killings were paraded in front of the media after apparently making confessions which were later withdrawn.

The pair have reportedly been charged with three offences - conspiracy to murder, conspiracy to rape and robbery.

Thai police denied reports that the Burmese embassy had formally retracted their confessions amid claims the pair were tortured.

Parents Warned Over Halloween Marijuana Sweets

Colorado police are warning parents that sweets laced with marijuana may end up in children's Halloween trick-or-treat bags.

The state was the first in the US to allowed recreational sales of the drug to adults earlier this year.

Experts issued pictures of two nearly identical gummy bears - one infused with marijuana concentrate and one without - and said it was almost impossible to tell the difference.

Police have also released a video warning parents some sweets may not be all they seem and they should check the products are made by well-known brands, throwing out anything that appeared tampered with.

Sergeant Brett Hinkle from Denver police's marijuana unit said: "Apples, gummy bears, there's a ton of different edible stuff out there on the market that's infused with marijuana."

Anti-drug activists say kids' favourites such as Sour Patch Kids, Pixy Stix and peanut butter cups have all been found in Colorado infused with potent marijuana concentrate.

Video: Colorado Legalises Sale Of Cannabis

In the video, the owner of one pot shop displays the gummy bears and explains how some producers of pot edibles buy cheap, generic sweets in bulk, then infuse them by spraying with hash oil.

Activists and police say the main risk to children is they could eat the sweets by accident, mistaking them for regular candy, not that they will be given them maliciously while out trick-or-treating.

A seven-year-old girl in Basalt, Colorado, was taken to hospital in June after her mother unwittingly brought home a chocolate ball containing the drug from a hotel she works at.

Patrick Johnson, from a Denver marijuana outlet, said: "Some of these products look so similar to candy that's been on the market and which we've eaten as children.

"There's really no way for a child or a parent, or even an expert in the field, to tell."

Officials have passed a law that by 1 January 2016 all pot edibles must be shaped, stamped, coloured or marked with a standard symbol.

Hong Kong Clashes As Protesters Fight Back

Dozens of people have been injured in new clashes in Hong Kong as pro-democracy campaigners took back an area that was cleared by police less than 24 hours earlier.

Riot officers used batons and pepper spray against protesters who pushed against police lines and shielded themselves with umbrellas.

Officers were eventually forced to retreat during violent scuffles with the crowd which numbered around 9,000.

Demonstrator Peter Yuen said: "The police have lost control of the situation. They've lost their minds. We've come here peacefully, to peacefully protest for our future."

Activists rushed to reoccupy their protest camp and rebuild makeshift barricades from packing crates and fences in an area of the Mong Kok district which police had opened to traffic just hours before.

At least 33 people were reportedly arrested in the skirmishes, while 18 officers were among the injured.

The protests, calling for fully free elections and the resignation of the territory's leader, Leung Chun-ying, have been going on for three weeks.

Video: Police Accused Of Protest Brutality

It was the third consecutive night violence had broken out after a fortnight which has been relatively quiet. The first week saw major clashes.

The latest came just hours after Mr Leung offered talks with student leaders next week in an attempt to defuse the protests.

His chief secretary, Carrie Lam, later announced discussions would take place for two hours on Tuesday.

Video: Dozens Held After Hong Kong Clashes

The Mong Kok area was calm later on Saturday with the number of protesters much smaller as activists rested. Police stood away from the barricades.

During the demonstrations, protesters have held sit-ins at three major intersections causing significant disruption to the city.

China has insisted that whoever stands to replace Mr Leung in elections in 2017 must be vetted by a committee that is expected to be loyal to Beijing.

Video: HK Protest Barriers Dismantled

But the protesters have dismissed the proposal as "fake democracy".

Hong Kong police commissioner Andy Tsang said his force had been tolerant since the rallies began in the hope that demonstrators would "calm down".

"Unfortunately these protesters chose to carry on with their unlawful acts, including acts which are even more radical and more violent," Mr Tsang said.

Nigeria Schoolgirls Could Be Free Within Days

Nigeria hopes 219 schoolgirls kidnapped by Islamist group Boko Haram will be freed by Tuesday, according to a government source.

Authorities earlier said they had agreed a ceasefire with the militant group to make the release possible.

"I can confirm the Federal Government is working hard to meet its own part of the agreement so that the release of the abductees can by effected either on Monday or latest by Tuesday next week," the source said.

But Bana Lawan, chairman of Chibok Local Government Area urged caution and said: "We don't know how true it is until we prove it. We will know the negotiations were successful when we see the girls physically.

"Then we will know it is true. And then we will celebrate."

Community leader Pogu Bitrus said: "People rejoiced, but with caution."

Both men said residents have been disappointed too many times in the past by reports of progress by Nigeria's government and military that later proved to be false.

On Friday, French President Francois Hollande welcomed the "good news" and told a news conference in Paris that the girls' release "could happen in the coming hours and days."

Abubakar Shekau is the leader of Boko Haram. He took control of the Islamist group after the death of founder Mohammed Yusuf in 2009.

  2. Little is known about him, although he was born in Shekau village in the northeastern state of Yobe and is now thought to be in his early 40s.

  3. Shekau is Nigeria's most-wanted man and was designated a terrorist by the U.S. government in 2012. A reward of $7m (£4.6m) and 50m Nigerian naira (£182,000) has been issued for information leading to his location.

  4. Shekau is also known as "Darul Tawheed", a reference to his knowledge of an orthodox doctrine of Islam centred on the oneness of Allah.

  5. Nigerian authorities thought he had been killed in 2009 during clashes with security forces, but he reappeared in a video in 2010 to claim leadership of Boko Haram.

  6. Shekau is believed to have been behind the August 2011 bombing of the UN compound in the capital Abuja, which killed at least 21 people.

  7. In a video released after the abduction of 276 girls from a boarding school in the village of Chibok on April 14, he described the youngsters as "slaves" and threatened to "sell them in the market".

France had been involved in negotiations that led to the release of several of its citizens kidnapped by Boko Haram in Cameroon.

Boko Haram (their name means 'education is sinful') kidnapped the 276 girls at gunpoint from a school in Chibok, northeastern Nigeria, on April 14.

Some of the girls managed to escape in the aftermath of their kidnap or during fighting among militants, but 219 are still unaccounted for.

Video: Nigeria 'Optimistic' Over Girls

The group has demanded the release of detained extremists in exchange for the girls.

Sky's Special Correspondent Alex Crawford said Boko Haram had "assured Nigerian authorities that the Chibok schoolgirls are well and safe".

The country's leader, Goodluck Jonathan, has faced strong criticism over a deteriorating security situation in Nigeria, with areas in the northeast Borno state inaccessible due to the threat from Boko Haram.

Nepal Trekking Tragedy Death Toll Climbs To 39

The number of people killed in a devastating snowstorm in Nepal's Himalayas climbed to 39 on Saturday, in the worst trekking disaster ever to hit the mountainous country.

The Foreign Office has confirmed it has spoken to concerned British families who have not heard from their relatives, though it is not thought there are any Britons among the dead.

An unofficial list of trekkers suggests more than a dozen Britons may have been in the area at the time of the storms, although some of them have since been confirmed as safe or rescued.

More than 230 trekkers - most of them foreigners - have been rescued since Wednesday and search teams continue to scour the Annapurna range looking for more survivors, who may be sheltering in lodges and huts.

Officials believe some people may be stranded in waist-deep snow in remote locations where mobile phone signal is poor.

The skies were clear at the start of the week, said Gombu Sherpa, who was guiding a group of Germans near the popular trekking circuit. But that changed suddenly when the snow blew in.

"We could hardly see anyone, even within a couple of feet. The wind was blowing snow and visibility was almost zero," he said, adding many people lost their way in the storm, but that everyone in his group survived.

One of his assistants, who was behind the group when the storm hit, was missing for an entire night, lost in the blizzard.

"We found him the next morning wandering in the snow. It is a miracle that he is alive," he said. Two trekkers from Hong Kong and 12 Israelis survived by taking refuge in a small tea shop .

One of the Israelis, Yakov Megreli, said they tried to stay awake to stay warm. "We tried not to sleep. We tried not to get hypothermia. It was a very frightening and awful situation," he said.

A British survivor has told how he escaped the disaster.

Paul Sheridan said walkers were left stumbling through "an abyss of nothing" as dense snow left them unable to get their bearings on the slopes of the mountain range in northern Nepal.

Mr Sheridan said that trekkers should have been prevented from going up the mountain, but were "herded to their deaths" by guides who he alleged were not carrying the correct emergency equipment.

Friends of Briton Lizi Hamer, who was originally unaccounted for, posted a message on Facebook announcing she had been found safe.

The 150-mile (240km) Annapurna circuit offers spectacular views of jagged peaks and Buddhist villages.

It takes almost three weeks to complete and is nicknamed the "apple pie" circuit because of the teahouses lining the route that offer cold beer and home baking.

Sheffield Utd Denies Ched Evans Contract Report

Sheffield United has denied reports it has offered a contract to disgraced footballer Ched Evans.

The striker was released from prison on Friday after serving half of a five-year sentence for raping a 19-year-old in a hotel room in Rhyl, North Wales.

The club's co-chairmen, Kevin McCabe and Jim Phipps, said they had not yet made a decision about whether to re-employ Evans.

"An article in The Sun today that Sheffield United has offered a contract to former player Ched Evans is false and damaging to the club," they said in a joint statement.

"We have made a statement on this matter previously and the lack of credibility and substance from this latest media report does not warrant any expansion from previous comments apart from noting that we are continuing to deliberate on any long-term decision about Ched Evans."

Video: 'Heartbreaking' If Evans Re-Signs

It came after a petition to block Evans returning to Bramall Lane reached more than 151,000.

Sheffield United Community Foundation patron Charlie Webster said if Evans re-signed for the club she would be "heartbroken" and "disappointed".

She told Sky News: "It would send out the wrong message to the next generation to watch Ched Evans score a goal and cheer him on as a hero."

Ms Webster also said it would "wrong" for her to stay in her role with the foundation if the club took him back.

Video: Backlash Over Ched Evans Petition

A statement posted on Evans' website from his family and girlfriend Natasha Massey said he would "continue the fight to clear his name".

"Chedwyn Evans maintains his absolute innocence and his family, friends and many who know the true facts of the case believe that his conviction was a gross miscarriage of justice."

The Welsh international, 25, admitted having sex with the unnamed woman, who told the jury she had no memory of the incident.

The prosecution said his victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was too drunk to consent to sexual intercourse.

  10. Footballer striker Marlon King is serving an 18-month sentence for dangerous driving. He's had several convictions and served multiple jail sentences.

Port Vale defender Clayton McDonald also admitted having sex with the woman, but was found not guilty of the same charge.

Earlier this week, TV presenter Judy Finnigan apologised after she said on the ITV show Loose Women that his crime was "not violent" and did not cause "bodily harm".

Tens Of Thousands Demonstrate Over Pay

Tens of thousands of workers have held protests in London, Glasgow and Belfast to call for an increase in wages.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) organised the demonstrations under the banner Britain Needs A Pay Rise, following days of industrial action from nurses, midwives and civil servants.

Midwives went on strike for the first time in their history over the Government's decision not to pay a recommended 1% increase to all NHS staff.

Hospital radiographers and prison officers are due to hold strikes next week over the same dispute.

TUC General Secretary Frances O'Grady said: "Our message is that after the longest and deepest pay squeeze in recorded history, it's time to end the lock-out that has kept the vast majority from sharing in the economic recovery.

Tens of thousands of workers have been taking part in protests to call for an end to austerity and to highlight the need for pay to increase

  2. Public sector workers including teachers, nurses, civil servants and hospital cleaners marched alongside railway workers, postmen and employees from private firms

  3. The main rally was in London but protests were also held in Glasgow and Belfast

  4. The TUC organised the demonstrations under the banner Britain Needs A Pay Rise, following days of industrial action by public sector workers

  5. The TUC says people are facing the biggest squeeze on their incomes since Victorian times, claiming average wages have fallen by £50 a week in real terms since 2007

  6. The TUC said between 80,000 and 90,000 were on the march in London

"The average worker is £50 a week worse off than in 2007 and five million earn less than the living wage. Meanwhile, top directors now earn 175 times more than the average worker."

Lynn Burbidge, a healthcare assistant at a hospital in Kent, said she was joining the march "because the Government needs to listen to us".

She said every month she faces a decision of whether to "pay your bills or buy food" and constantly having to budget was "demeaning".

Video: Life On NHS Wages Is 'Demeaning'

"I've worked for the NHS for nearly 30 years and I'm still in the same position," she told Sky News.

"I'm 20% worse off now than what I was 10 years ago ... while the Government they've just accepted an 11% pay rise - I'm only after 1%."

Jade Hill, 30, who works as a nurse at a hospital in Norfolk, said her pay meant she and her partner could not yet afford to start a family.

Video: TUC: Workers £50 A Week Worse Off

"I can barely afford to keep me and my husband, let alone having children on top of that, at the moment it is impossible," she said.

One cleaner, called Nana, told Sky News how he struggles to provide for his family despite juggling three jobs and working a 12-hour day on minimum wage.

"My social life is very bad. Secondly, I have a lot of debt to pay. The TV licence is coming up and we haven't got enough money to pay it," he said.

Video: Wages Fall As Economy Grows

"They wrote to me that the bailiffs will come to my house. I've no choice, (but to) pray for the nation to come to our aid, to increase our wages and then we can make our ends meet."

A Treasury spokesman said: "Under this Government we've seen the largest annual fall in unemployment, more people in work than ever before, and inequality lower than the average under the previous government, proving that the Government's long-term economic plan is working.

"The only sustainable way to raise living standards is to keep working through the plan that is building a resilient economy and has enabled us to announce the first real-terms increase in the minimum wage since the great recession.

"We appreciate that the effects of the great recession are still being felt, which is why we have taken continued action to help hard-working people by cutting income tax, freezing fuel duty, helping local authorities to freeze council tax, cutting energy bills, providing free school meals, and reducing childcare costs."

Hostage Families Urge Unity To Fight IS Evil

The brother and widow of the two British hostages murdered by Islamic State have made a joint appeal for communities to unite against the terror group.

Michael Haines and Barbara Henning made the plea ahead of a memorial service in Perth for David Haines, who was killed last month.

Mr Haines urged people from all faiths to "stand up with us calling for unity" after what he called the "senseless murders" of his brother and Alan Henning.

With his hand held by Mrs Henning, he said: "I hope communities can become closer."

And he called on people to "go into your neighbourhood and shake the hands of the people there no matter their background, race, colour or religion".

He said the only way "we can fight this evil is by bringing communities closer together".

He said: "I am calling on all of us - every community, every faith - in the coming weeks and months, to find a single act of unity. One simple gesture, one act, one moment that draws people together."

Video: Tribute To Murdered Aid Worker

He also paid tribute to his brother as well as Alan Henning, saying they were humanitarian workers who went into Syria to help people there.

Mr Haines said: "These were two men who sought to do good and sought to make the world a better place."

David Haines' teenage daughter, Bethany, and Michael Haines were among those who spoke at the service, where they shared some of their memories of him.

Michael Haines' son, Euan, read a poem, Not How Did He Die, But How Did He Live, in memory of his uncle.

The service also featured several hymns, including Amazing Grace, as well as the song Going Home, by the Scottish band Runrig.

Video: PM's Vow After David Haines Murder

Earlier Mr Haines and Barbara Henning issued a joint statement, saying that "together we (communities) have the power to defeat the most hateful acts".

They said: "David and Alan's killers want to hurt all of us and stop us from believing in the very things which took them into conflict zones - charity and human kindness.

"We condemn those who seek to drive us apart and spread hatred by attempting to place blame on Muslims or on the Islamic faith for the actions of these terrorists."

The pair both said they had been overwhelmed by messages of support from the British public and people all over the world.

Mr Haines also said his "kind, caring" brother "didn't see other nationalities or religions, he just saw other human beings in need of a real help to get by, or sometimes a lot of help to live to see another day".

Video: Perth Mourns Killed Hostage Haines

David Haines, 44, had been helping refugees in Syria in a camp near the Turkish border when he kidnapped in March 2013.

Alan Henning, 47, was a volunteer on an aid convoy in Syria when he was taken in December 2013.

Islamic State (IS) released videos in recent weeks showing their murders.
